“Nutrition and exercise is at the core of prevention and health maintenance,” Stamford physician Dr. Anne Brewer said at the event. Brewer, co-chair of Stamford’s Childhood Obesity Task Force, started working with the group nearly 10 years ago to stem the rising tide of childhood obesity.

Brewer’s task force works with many groups in Stamford, including learning centers; schools; the Department of Parks and Recreation; and the Boys & Girls Club. While she encourages healthy habits, she said the message is meant to be fun and not unenjoyable.

“We’re not the food police,” Brewer said. “We’re not trying to make peoples’ lives miserable. We’re trying to make them healthier and therefore happier and actually to realize that eating well and exercising makes you feel better, makes you happier, makes you healthier, and gives you the vitality to do the things that you want to with your life.”

Partners participating in the monthlong celebration include Stamford Health’s KIDS’ FANS, Ferguson Library, Fairgate Farm, ShopRite, Family Centers, Chartwells, United Way, Optimus, Childcare Learning Centers and Fleet Feet Sports.

The month is a nutrition education and information campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

Attendees at Stamford’s celebration were able to sample healthy foods by local organizations and talk with nutrition professions, who were stationed at tables in the government center's lobby.
