African Drummers Highlight Pinkster Festival

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. -- Philipsburg Manor will host the Discover Pinkster! festival on Saturday, May 14.

Festival highlights include African drumming and musical demonstrations directed by Master Drummer Neil Clarke, folktales, cooking demonstrations, dancing, dramatic vignettes and more.

Drummers include Ghanian native Maxwell Kofi Donkor and Sankofa Ensemble, Ayanda Clarke, Kofi Osei Williams and Kwesi Nkroma.

Other musical performers include Ronald W. Jackson Jr. (banjo), Muhamadou Salieu Suso (kora), Henrique Prince (fiddle) and Jimmy Cruz (skekere/flute).

Judith Samuel and the Children of Dahomey will give an African Colonial dance performance. April Armstrong will lead storytelling.

Pam Nyambi and Michael W. Twitty will present historic food demonstrations.

The Pinkster Parade and the Game of Lies begin at 11 a.m., after which the community will crown the Pinkster King. A Pinkster Regent will be named following an election at 2 p.m.

A marketplace will offer a selection of African jewelry, print fabrics, brooms and switches.

African-American cuisine from Nikki Toi's Soul Food will be available for purchase, as will treats from Geordane's of Irvington.

Admission is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and $8 for children ages 3 to 17 if purchased online at www.hudsonvalley.org .

Tickets are $2 more per person at the door. Historic Hudson Valley members and children under age 3 are admitted for free.
