TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – A pair of Tarrytown hotels have been listed among the best hotels in the nation.
The Tarrytown House Estate and Conference Center , along with the Castle Hotel and Spa , formerly the Castle on the Hudson, are included among U.S. News & World Report's 2013 best hotels in the U.S. list.
The list names the Top 10 in the nation, then lists the best of the rest by state. The Tarrytown House Estate earns spot No. 59 on the New York list, while the Castle Hotel sits at No. 91.
The annual survey bases its rankings on guest reviews, hotel ratings and its reputation among professional travel experts.
Both hotels have historical roots in Tarrytown.
The Tarrytown House Estate includes two 19th century mansions — the King Mansion and the Biddle Mansion. The King Mansion, originally called “Uplands,” was built around 1840 by J.S. Cronise. Railroad magnate Thomas King purchased it around 1900. The Biddle Mansion was extensively renovated in 1895 by William Harris, the founder of the American Tobacco Company.
Originally named “Carrol Cliff,” the Castle was built in 1897 by General Howard Carroll. It was inspired by Castle Lismore in County Waterford, Ireland.
The Castle hotel is currently closed for renovation until May 2013. Officials are building a new luxury spa and redesigning the hotel.
“The development of the THANN Sanctuary Spa is the first part of a $10 million renovation project that includes 4,100 square feet of meeting and banquet space, the 31 luxurious guest rooms and suites, public spaces, and the award-winning Equus restaurant and kitchen,” Jiro Sato, president of Sankara Hospitality Group, said in a statement. “The luxurious space will open in May 2013 and will be a magnificent addition to Castle Hotel & Spa.”
Renovations will maintain the architectural elements of the main Castle and showcase collectibles gathered from around the world.
