The new 12.9-inch tablet was set to begin production in the first quarter, but now the computer company is exploring the option of adding a USB 3.0 port that would allow for high-speed data transfer and backup. Apple's current iterations of the iPad, and iPad mini don't have onboard USB ports, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The new, large iPad has become a need after the larger, iPhone 6 has begun to eat away at iPad sales, which are down 18 percent, The Wall Street Journal said.
